Rethinking Basic Needs

There are certain things in our wardrobe that we need every season to make everything else we own work for us – our basics. Choose well, and your basics will take you through the year.

Finding the perfect white t-shirt, a fantastic bra and some classic-cut jeans is much more of a difficult task than you would think. With so much choice, and so many ways to get sidetracked, finding your best basics is your first step to the best capsule wardrobe.

Rather than dismiss the basics, you get this right, and the rest is easy. So let’s take a trip through the staples and find the best basics to take you through to autumn.

Great Underwear

If you’re thinking about your wardrobe and what you need, the first thing to consider is your underwear. Underwear is the foundation of your entire look; without a great fitting bra, your outfit won’t work, it’s like building a house with no foundations – saggy and unstable.

Let me introduce you, ladies with large busts, to our favourite brand Freya. It’s challenging to get a great bra that fits and doesn’t cost the earth. After years of research, we have found Freya to be reliable with great choices with styles to suit every outfit. And they also make swimwear.

Recommending Freya, dear reader is a valuable style tip as Freya’s mission has always been to create beautiful designs that fit all women, not just those with ‘regular’ sized busts. Feya uses gorgeous fabrics and high-quality construction which makes Freya a great choice even for the most fashion-conscious.

Freya Fearne Underwired Plunge Balcony Bra (£25.39-44.90)

Freya Fearne Underwired Plunge Balcony Bra comes in white and also in black. Sizes range from back size 28 inches to 38 inches, and cup sizes DD to JJ. Trust us, and you won’t be disappointed.

For those with a small bust which needs some encouragement, Freya has a gorgeous range starting at 28B. If you’re smaller in size than that, Petit Bateau makes some beautiful non-wired t-shirt bras. Talking about t-shirts next, the right white t-shirt is a must-have wardrobe staple.

Petit Bateau Women’s Vest (£14.91)

Petit Bateau makes cool t-shirts and vests. Petit Bateau is known for children’s clothes, but they also make clothes for adults. For some unknown reason, they don’t advertise this fact, great news for us not so good for them.

Another reason we love them is Petit Bateau make t-shirts that are long in the body. The longer length body is rare in a high street brand, nothing is more annoying if you’re tall, or plus size, than pulling down your t-shirt every five minutes.

Excellent quality and beautifully cut to make the perfect white t-shirt look like the main course, and not a side order.

Petit Bateau Women’s Vest (pack of 2) (£26.59)

While you’re at it, buy a two-pack of vests from Petit Bateau. Not just a vest, but a top in the heat and a staple under a summer dress. So well made; sustainable as they wash and wash and always come up looking like new.

Cap Sleeve T-Shirt By TopShop (£22.00)

Topshop does a great basic white tee for those who like a cropped style. The hem stops at the belly button. So if you have a small frame, are a petite size with a small chest this t-shirt is for you. Topshop makes this t-shirt every year, and it always sells out. Great price point too.

Flattering Jeans

Finding the right jeans is like finding the holy grail. Summer calls for relaxed dressing, and nothing looks more classic and cool than a perfect white t-shirt and great jeans. Let’s talk about style first, though. Boot cut or skinny? Straight or flared?

Every capsule wardrobe needs a jean cut that will not go out of style by next season. We have found jeans for you in classic fashionable styling that you can wear and wear. So that’s the good news. Here’s the not so good news – skinny jeans are out.

After 12 years at the top, these wardrobe staples need to retire. Sorry folks! And while we’re at it, give the boot cut jeans to the charity shop as well.

High Rise Indigo Straight Jeans (£48.00)

Designer jeans claim to be the answer to your problems. So we have checked out the claims and found that the best designer brand with a great sustainable history and ethics are Citizens of Humanity and their Harlow Ankle High Rise Slim Jeans in blue. A firm favourite with Trinny Woodall of the Trinny and Susannah ‘what not to wear’ fame and for good reason. Classy with a capital C.
